The Heartbreaking Reality of Small Business in 2025

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five and a half years since I started this small business journey. Time has a funny way of flying by, but when I take a moment to reflect, I can’t help but notice how much the landscape has changed.

Do you remember the pandemic? Those early days when we were all stuck at home, feeling the weight of the world, unsure of what was to come. But in the midst of that uncertainty, there was a surprising shift. Small businesses became more than just a place to get goods or services – they became a lifeline. The big chains were closed or limited, and suddenly, the community turned to the local makers, crafters, and entrepreneurs to fill the gap.

There was a real sense of connection, wasn’t there? Small businesses, which had always operated in the background, were now the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. Was it because we finally had the time to follow our dreams when the world slowed down? Or was it that we saw, perhaps for the first time, how vital these businesses were for a thriving, sustainable community?

Fast forward to 2025, and it feels like we’re in a different world. As I look around, I see small businesses closing their doors every week. Some of my fellow entrepreneurs who once flourished are now fighting to stay afloat. It’s heartbreaking. Every time I see a post that says "RIP" to yet another beloved local shop or service, it’s like I’m walking through a graveyard on Instagram. And the worst part? It’s not an isolated incident.

The marketplace has shifted. The big players are back, and the competition is fierce. The reality is that many of us small business owners just can’t keep up with the changing tides. We’ve had to pivot and change course more times than I can count. It’s exhausting and often feels like I’m treading water, trying to stay afloat while watching my community slip away.

But here’s the thing: I still believe in the power of small businesses. I still believe that if we band together, if we support one another, we can make it through this storm. The truth is, our communities depend on us. When we shop local, our hard-earned dollars stay within the community. We keep the lights on for our neighbors, and we create jobs, connections, and a sense of pride.

So, how do we survive? How do we make it through this challenging time?

We build an army.

Not a literal one, of course, but a small business army. One that collaborates instead of competing. One that buys from each other, supports each other, and champions one another’s successes. I used to see small businesses showcasing products from other local businesses – I don’t see that as much anymore. I miss it. And I believe we need to bring that spirit back.

Let’s shift the narrative. When you’re buying, choose small. When you’re promoting, collaborate with a local maker or creator. Let’s show our communities why supporting small businesses isn’t just nice – it’s necessary.

I know things are tight right now. I know that prices are rising, and it feels like every dollar has to be stretched to the max. But here’s the truth: less is more. If we all adopt a mindset of buying when we can, supporting when we can, we’ll make a bigger impact than we ever imagined.

To the consumer reading this: I know you want to help. I know you care about your community. I’m asking for your support. When you’re making purchases, look for local options. Whether it’s the coffee shop down the street, a handmade piece of jewelry, or a local online shop, your dollars matter.

And to my fellow small business owners: I see you. I’m here. If you need advice, support, or just a friend, reach out. Let's collaborate more, let’s share our resources, and let’s rebuild this community together. We need each other, now more than ever.

At FLW Outfitters, I’m not just about selling products. I’m about creating connections, spreading support, and building something stronger than what we were before. Because the truth is, we need each other to survive.

Together, we can make small businesses thrive once more.

Let’s make 2025 the year we fight for what matters – community.

With hope, AshleyFLW Outfitters
